PROVO, Utah (Aug. 12,2009) – Senior forward Alyssa Vander Veur scored the lone goal in the annual BYU women’s soccer blue white scrimmage to give the Cougars in white the victory, Wednesday.

With just over eight minutes remaining in the final 25-minute period, midfielder Auna Janis kicked the ball to freshman Carlee Payne who made a pass to an open Vander Veur who would shoot the ball into the corner of the net.

“I saw a lot of great things tonight both offensively and defensively,” said head coach Jennifer Rockwood. “Our returning players played very solid and you can certainly see the talent that we have in our freshman class. We still have a lot to improve on, but this was one of the better blue white games we’ve had in quite a while.”

Prior to the goal-winning score, the white team had numerous scoring opportunities especially in the second period. With 10 minutes left freshman Carlee Payne had a shot that went just outside of the left post. On the next possession, sophomore Lauren Anderson had a one-on-one breakaway opportunity but was unable to score. Payne and Anderson would each have a couple of other changes to score.

The team played three 25-minute halves, giving most of the players on the roster an opportunity to play. Sophomore all-american McKinzie Olson who was named to last year’s TopDrawer Socccer.com All Rookie Second Team and to the SoccerBuzz Freshman All-America Second Team headlined the goalkeeping position. Also seeing action at the keeper position were junior Simone Seymour and freshman Erica Owens.

Cougar fans will have one more opportunity to see the team in action this week. An exhibition game versus Dixie State is schedule for Sat., Aug. 15 at 7p.m. Admission is free.

The team’s home opener is on Fri., Sept. 4 when William & Mary makes its first ever visit to South Field. That game kicks off at 7 p.m.
