BYU defeats Boise State 6-1 at home for third-straight victory

PROVO, Utah – BYU women's tennis defeated Boise State 6-1 on Friday afternoon for its third consecutive victory. The Cougars improved to 6-3 on the season, 3-1 at home. 

Freshman Emmie Moore secured her seventh singles victory of the season, remaining undefeated at 7-0. Sophomore Jacque Dunyon recorded her eighth singles victory of the season, improving to 8-1. The Cougars swept the singles matches 6-0. 

Doubles

  1. Dicenza/Maruffo (BSU) def. Astle/Huang 7-6 (8-6)
  2. Stewart/Baptista(BSU) def. Li/Moore 6-2
  3. Jiao/Wheatley (BYU) def. Heffernan/Ernstberger 6-4

      Order of finish: 2, 3, 1

Li and Moore, at no. 2 doubles, quickly fell down 4-1 and eventually were defeated. 

Jiao and Wheatley, at no. 3 doubles, led early 2-1, and later extended their lead to 4-2. The tandem never looked back, and secured the win. 

Astle and Huang, at no. 1 doubles, fell in the first game but quickly responded winning the second, evening the score at 1-1. Later, Discenza and Marruffo won two-straight games and led 3-1. The two teams split back-to-back games as the Broncos led 4-3. Astle and Huang went on to win two-straight games leading 5-4. Boise State responded evening the score at 5-5 and the two sides later exchanged wins as the score was tied at 6-6. A tiebreaker was needed to decide the doubles point as both teams went back and forth before they were tied at 6. Discenza and Marrutto won the next two points securing the doubles point for the Broncos.

Dunyon, at no. 3, was tied with Stewart 2-2 and later won the first set 6-3. Dunyon continued to maintain control and defeated Stewart in the second set 6-4, winning the match. 

Li, at no. 4, led Baptista early 2-0 before winning the set 6-4. It was all Li in the second set as she defeated Baptista 6-2, winning the match. 

Huang, at no. 1, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and won the first set 6-2. In the second set, Huang led 4-3 and eventually won the set 6-4, winning the match. 

Astle, at no. 2, trailed 3-4 to Marruffo and eventually fell in the first set 6-3. In the second set, Astle took a 3-2 lead and won the second set 6-4. Astle jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the third set and later extended her lead to 5-1. It only took Astle one more game which she won, securing the match and clinching the overall victory for BYU. 

Jaio, at no. 6, won the first set 6-2 and defeated Heffernan 6-2 in the second set, winning the match. 

Moore, at no. 5, led 3-2 and eventually won the first set 6-4. In the second set, Moore trailed 4-2, before fighting back and making it 4-3 but Discenza hung on and won 6-3 forcing a third set. In a third-set tiebreaker, Moore jumped out to an early 4-2 lead and never looked back winning 10-6. 

The Cougars return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Mar. 11 against Utah. The home match will begin at 2:30 p.m. MST.
