Cougars hit the road for a second tournament

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s volleyball team travels to Portland, Ore., this weekend to compete in the Portland State Tournament, its second invitational of the season.

The No. 25-ranked Cougars (2-2) first face host Portland State on Friday at 6 p.m. PDT.

This will be the ninth matchup between the two teams, with BYU taking a 3-0 win last season in Provo.

So far, the Vikings are 2-2 on the year with losses coming at the hands of No. 5 Washington and No. 12 Oregon.

On Saturday the Cougars will continue play by heading to the Portland Nike Invitational with a match against Fresno State at 10 a.m. PDT at the University of Portland.

This is the 17th matchup between BYU and the former WAC foe. BYU leads the all-time series 15-1 and won last in Provo 3-0 in 1998.

The Bulldogs are 1-2 so far this season, winning in five sets to Rice and losing in five sets to both Cal State Northridge and WCC opponent Santa Clara. Fresno State plays against WCC foe Portland on Friday before facing the Cougars.

BYU will finish out tournament play by heading back to Portland State to play against the University of Oklahoma on Saturday at 5 p.m. PDT.

The Cougars and Sooners last squared off in the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2012, with BYU sweeping Oklahoma in three sets in Provo. This will be the seventh time the two teams have competed against each other, with the Cougars holding a 5-1 lead in the series.

The Cougars' two loses of the season came against No. 25 Creighton and Hampton Inn Invitational host Bowling Green State.
