Corvallis, Ore.--BYU's men's golf team got off to shotgun start as they opened the 2000-2001 season with by shooting 8-under-par to lead after the first round of the Nike Northwest Classic at Trysting Tree Golf Course.
After winning several amateur tournaments over the summer, Billy Harvey continued his hot streak by shooting an opening round 65. Harvey was followed by Provo native Jared Overton. Overton, playing in his first tournament on the road, shot a 68. Seniors Jesse Hibler and Scott Miller shot 69 and 70 respectively while Manuel Merizalde shot a first-round 71.
"It will be very interesting to see how we handle the next couple of rounds," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "It's great to be in this position, but we've got plenty of golf left to play."
The Cougars have traditionally shot well at Trysting Tree, capturing the Nike Northwest Classic championship three out of the last four times. Trysting tree is a par-70 course.
