Tucson, Ariz. (May 2, 2001)--USA Baseball announced BYU's Matt Carson to a list of the first 19 collegiate players invited to participate in the 2001 USA Baseball National Team Trials - to be held in Tucson, Arizona June 16-19.
Carson, a sophomore from Yucaipa, Calif., was one of 33 invited to the trials last summer for Team USA, but did not survive the final cut. He currently leads the Mountain West Conference with 17 home runs and was a freshman All-American last season.
The USA National Team will be selected from a pool of approximately 20-29 players, of which an additional 5-10 have yet to be determined. Team USA will play approximately 30 games on the Red, White and Blue Summer Tour, beginning on June 22 with the 30th annual USA vs Japan Collegiate All-Star Series, which this year will be played in Japan.

Mississippi State's Pat McMahon will serve as the head coach for Team USA. He will be assisted by Dusty Rhodes of North Florida, Paul Stevens of Northwestern, and Bob Todd of Ohio State. For interested scouts, this team will be holding practice sessions at the Hi Corbett Field facilities in Tucson beginning Saturday, June 16. The official team roster will be determined and announced on June 19.
