PROVO -- Newly hired BYU softball head coach Gordon Eakin has announced his assistant coaches for the upcoming 2003 season. Vaughn Alvey, formerly the coach of nine-time state champion Alta High, and Mindy Hanson, two-time BYU team captain, will join Eakin at BYU's coaching staff.
"We are very fortunate to have Alvey's experience and recognition as part of our new coaching staff," said Eakin. "Hanson is an excellent communicator with great organizational skills that will help breach the generation gap between the coaches and our young players."
Alvey coached for the past 17 seasons at Alta High School. In thirteen of those seasons, the Hawks reached the state championship game, including three straight titles from 1999-2001. He represented the nation as a pitcher on two USA teams for the Pan-American games, bringing home silver medals in 1983 in Caracas, Venezuela and in 1987 in Indianapolis, Ind.
A Utah Sports Hall of Fame Inductee last November, Alvey will be coaching the pitchers and working with recruiting for BYU softball. He is married to Kay and is the father of five children. His family resides in Sandy, Utah.
Hanson was a two-year team captain for BYU in 2000-01. She was named MWC All-Conference as a junior and recently graduated from BYU this spring in Recreation Management. Before playing at BYU, Hanson was a two-year team captain at UVSC before softball was sanctioned as a varsity sport at BYU.
