Cougars start season at Tucker Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE -- Sophomore Greg Machtaler shot 70-72--142 and is in fifth place after two rounds of the 2002 Willam Tucker invitational.

Amidst tough afternoon winds the Cougars started their 2002-03 campaign shooting 293-295--588 and sit in eighth place.

"I saw a lot of good shots out there today," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Machtaler and (Ron) Harvey really gave us a boost this morning with solid first round."

Machtaler, who had best 2001-2002 stroke average among the current BYU players, started his sophomore season strong. He is the lone Cougar among the top 20 individuals and, along with Harvey, was the only Cougar to shoot below par in the morning round.

"He was really solid today," Brockbank said. "It would be great to see him go out tomorrow and finish with a good third round."

Harvey and senior Jared Overton both are three-over-par after two rounds and in 33rd place. Highly-touted freshman Daniel Summerhays competing in his first tournament as a Cougar shot 79-73--152.

"Daniel (Summerhays) has all kinds of potential and it was good to see him bounce back after a tough first round," Brockbank said. "He's a real special golfer and a great addition to this team."

Host New Mexico leads fellow MWC member UNLV by one stroke while UNM senior Michael Letzig is the individual leader after shooting 69-68--137 seven-under-par.

BYU hopes to improve on its eigth-place position during Saturday's third and final round at the University of New Mexico Championship course.
