Summerhays leads Cougars at Sooner Invitational

FRISCO -- Freshman Daniel Summerhays, playing in only his second tournament as a Cougar, is four-under-par as the Cougars sit in eigth place after two rounds of the Sooner Invitational on Monday.

Summerhays, a highly-touted freshman from Farmington, Utah continues to make an immediate impact on a young, but talented BYU team. In last weekend's Tucker Invitational Summerhays shot a final round 67 and then began the Sooner Invitational's first round with his second consecutive 67.

"He's a gamer and a class act," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said of Summerhays.

Summerhays is tied for 11th place while sophomore teammates Ron Harvey Jr. and Greg Machtaler both are tied for 22nd.

"Our top three guys were solid today," Brockbank said. "We just need someone to step up in that fourth spot and give us a great score."

Harvey finished the first two rounds at even par despite fighting through a tough cold. Fellow Sophomore Greg Machtaler, who finished sixth out of 96 individuals in last weekend's Tucker Invitational, continued to play solid golf closing the day with a second round four-under 68.

TCU, behind the play of individual leader Colby Beckstrom, lead the talented field that includes five teams ranked in the nation's top 25. BYU is in eigth place just three strokes behind fourth-ranked Texas.

Because of BYU's Sunday-play policy, the Cougars began the tournament without the benefit of Sunday's practice round and hence struggled reading the greens in the first two rounds.

"We're facing some talented teams in this tournament," Brockbank said. "But it's a good experience for our young guys to be out here playing against some of the best."

The third and final round of the Sooner Invitational will begin 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
