FRESNO -- Greg Machtaler and Daniel Summerhays are at five-under-par and the Cougars sit in second place before second-round action was suspended due to darkness at the Fresno Lexus Classic on Friday.
The young Cougar squad, bolstered by great putting, got off to their best start of the season by shooting 291, just three shots behind leader and host Fresno State. BYU was on pace to finish the second round at five-over 293.
"We played great team golf today," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "Our short game was really going for us.
With play being suspended before the end of the second round, results were not made official, but Machtaler and Summerhays were both close to the individual lead.
"Any time you've got two individuals fighting for the lead, it's going to give your team a big boost," Brockbank said.
Before play was suspended, the Cougars were just six strokes behind Fresno State.
"We're going to go out tomorrow and get after it," Machtaler said. "If we can keep our short game going, we're going to have a chance to win it."
The Cougars had four chip-ins on the day to help propel them into second place. The 16-team, 54-hole tournament is being played at the par 72, 6,847-yard San Joaquin Country Club.
