PROVO -- BYU head coach Gary Crowton today announced the hiring of Todd Bradford as receiver coach for the Cougars. Bradford fills the vacancy left by Mike Borich, who left the University to pursue other opportunities. Bradford comes to BYU from Middle Tennessee State University, where he was the defensive secondary and kickoff cover coach under Andy McCollum.
Prior to joining the Blue Raiders coaching staff for the 2002 season, Bradford served as defensive secondary coach at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., from 2000-01. During the 2000 season, Bradford's secondary had one of the top efficiency ratings in the Big Ten, while collecting 21 interceptions. In his two seasons with the Badgers, Bradford coached two Big Ten All-Conference performers including Jamar Fletcher, who won the Jim Thorpe Award as the nation's top defensive back in 2000.
"I have known Todd for quite some time and have enjoyed our association over the years," said Crowton. "He is an outstanding coach, motivator and is a very good recruiter. He brings a wealth of experience and energy to the program and I'm pleased to have him join our coaching staff."
Before his time in Wisconsin, Bradford spent three season's (1997-99) at Louisiana Tech, in Ruston, La., on Crowton's staff, including two years as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator.
"Some of my greatest coaching experiences have come while working with Coach Crowton, so it's really exciting for me to join his staff at BYU," said Bradford. "The football program at BYU has such great tradition, and I'm looking forward to working with Gary to ensure the Cougars remain successful in the future. It's really great for me and my family to return home to Utah."
Bradford began his coaching career in 1987 as the defensive secondary coach, special teams coach and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Southern Utah University in Cedar City, Utah. The following year, he moved to the University of New Hampshire, in Durham, N.H., where he served in numerous positions from 1988-93, including running back coach, defensive secondary coach and recruiting coordinator. In 1994, Bradford became the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Lehigh University, in Bethlehem, Pa. The following year he moved to Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., where he worked as defensive secondary coach from 1995-96. He joined Crowton's coaching staff at Louisiana Tech in 1997.
As a player, Bradford was a starter at safety at Ricks College from 1983-84, where he helped the Vikings advance to the junior college national championship game in the Valley of the Sun Bowl in 1984. He finished his playing career as a safety at SUU.
Bradford was raised in Salt Lake City, where he graduated from Granite High School in 1981. He received a bachelor's degree in physical education with a minor in geology from SUU in 1986. He was also named physical education student-of-the-year in 1986.
Todd and his wife Sondra have a son Kody, and three daughters Ashlee, Hailee, and Whitnee.
