COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU senior first baseman Jake Stubblefield and UNLV freshman righthander Matt Luca are the Mountain West Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Stubblefield and Luca are first-time award winners.
Stubblefield, from San Diego, Calif. (Ricks JC), went 6-for-14 (.429) from the plate last week in helping the Cougars to a five-game win streak, including a sweep of conference rival Utah (9-5, 6-4, 10-5). Stubblefield went 1-for-3 with two RBI in game one vs. Utah and posted his best performance of the week in game two vs. the Utes, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI. His two-run double in the fifth inning of game one put the Cougars up 6-5, and his two-run double in the seventh inning of game two broke a 4-4 tie. He closed out the week with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with a double and two RBI in game three. For the week, Stubblefield totaled seven RBI, three doubles and a home run.
Luca, from Galveston, Texas (Ball HS), tossed the first-ever no-hitter in MWC play and the first since 1990 for UNLV as he tallied 11 strikeouts in a 5-0 win over San Diego State. Luca, who was also named Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week for his efforts, allowed only three Aztecs to reach base.
