PROVO -- BYU heated up in the second round to take a share of the lead with the University of Denver on Friday at the 2003 PING Cougar Classic at Riverside Country Club..
The Cougars shot a tournament low six-under-par 282 in the afternoon round to lift BYU into the lead. BYU was led by true freshman Oscar Alvarez who is tied for second place at four-under-par. Sophomore Greg Machtaler also had a banner day going two-under and tied for sixth after two rounds. BYU was in fourth place after the first round, but got a big boost from Daniel Summerhays who rebounded from a 76 to shoot three-under-par in the second round.
"It's nice to see us come out and play well in our home tournament," BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. "We haven't pulled off a tournament victory this year, so it would be nice to pull this one off."
The Cougars got a boost from a visit by 2003 Masters Champion and former Cougar golfer Mike Weir, who was on the sidelines for part of the afternoon.
"That was so awesome to look up and see him there," Machtaler, a fellow Canadian said.
"He could have been out doing a hundred million things," Brockbank said. "That was sure nice to have him out supporting us."
Individually, Colorado State's Martin Laird holds a four-shot lead (67-69--136) over Alvarez and two others. The Rams trail BYU and Denver by four strokes.
Final round play will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Riverside Country Club. The public is welcome and admission is free.
