Gary Johnson, former BYU outfielder, was called up Saturday by the California Angels from the Salt Lake City AAA Club Stingers.
Johnson, from Atherton, Calif., played at BYU in 1999 after transferring from the University of California when he was a 6-3, 205 junior who had just completed a Church mission to Spain. Johnson has been completing his degree at BYU in the off-season.
At BYU he was second-team All-Western Athletic Conference and Academic All-WAC, batting .388 in 53 games with 17 doubles, 13 homers and 58 RBI.
Johnson joins former Cougar Brian Banks (1990, 93), now with the Florida Marlins, as current BYU players in the Major League.
