ALBUQUERQUE -- Junior righthander Paul Jacinto of BYU was named Tuesday as the Pitcher of the Year for the Mountain West Conference.
Joining Jacinto on the first-team All-MWC team was his teammate Doug Jackson. The Cougars had two named to the All-MWC second-team with shortstop Ranger Wiens and freshman pitcher Ken Gravley. Jackson, an outfielder, was a repeat selection from the 2002 team, while Gravley and UNLV pitcher Matt Luca were the only freshman named to either of the two teams.
Jacinto, a 6-0, 190-pound junior from Encinitas, Calif., posted a league-best 9-1 record in MWC games with 53 strikeouts. He held MWC opponents to a conference record low .222 batting average this season in 10 appearances. He is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against New Mexico at 7 p.m.
The Cougars are ranked in seven NCAA categories in the latest statistics. BYU is ranked 11th nationally with a .332 batting average and seventh in scoring with an 8.9 average. Wiens is ranked 32nd with a .406 batting average and third in doubles with a .49 average. Obrey is ranked seventh in doubles with a .47 average and 20th with a 1.27 average in RBI. Jackson is ranked fifth in triples with a .16 average.
Thursday's tournament action will be televised by CSTV DirecTV 610 with Barry Tompkins calling the play-by-play, Darryl Hamilton as color analyst and Mike Powers with sideline reports.
