DRAPER -- Thanks to the help of some current and former Cougars, the Utah Spiders earned their first win of the season in their home opener at Soaring Eagle Stadium.
The Spiders took a 3-1 win over the Lady Arizona Sahuaros Saturday night with two of the three Spider goals being scored by BYU players. Jeni Viernes scored the first goal to tie the Lady Sahuaros and Krissa Campbell scored the third goal during the 72nd minute to seal the victory.
"Playing tough opponents in game situations provides good practice during the off season," said BYU Coach Jennifer Rockwood. "The more touches they have with the ball the better."
Since beginning play in 1998, the Spiders have consistently drawn on the talent of the Cougar team to fill the team's roster. There are currently six Cougars playing for the Utah Spiders this summer, they are: seniors Lydia Ojuka, Farah Olmstead, juniors Krissa Campbell and Kimmie Davis, as well as sophomores Davia King and Ashley Smith. The Spiders also have three BYU Alumni: Jennie Christianson, Sara Reading and Jeni Viernes.
The Utah Spiders is one of 18 teams in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). The WPSL is a national adult amateur league formed in 1998 as a regional amateur league serving the Western United States. Opponents for the Spiders include teams from California, Arizona and Colorado.
The Utah Spiders will face the California Storm on Saturday June 7th at 7:00 p.m. (MDT) at Soaring Eagle Stadium at the Skaggs Catholic Center in Draper, Utah.
