NEW YORK -- The Atlanta Hawks selected Travis Hansen from Brigham Young University with the 37th pick in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft, Thursday.
The 6-6 shooting guard from Orem, Utah is the first Cougar taken in the draft in 10 years since Shawn Bradley was picked second in the 1993 draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. Hansen is the first BYU player selected under head coach Steve Cleveland.
Hansen was a consensus All-Mountain West Conference First-team selection in 2003. He was voted MWC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and led BYU in scoring the past two seasons at 16.8 and 15.6 points per game.
A transfer from UVSC, Hansen played a shortened season as a sophomore due to a broken foot. He started in nine games and helped the Cougars to a 7-2 record in those games. He has the all-time best home record of any BYU player at 44-1 during his three seasons in Cougar uniform.
At the end of the college basketball season, Hansen was predicted as a mid to late second round pick. He improved draft status at the Portsmouth Invitational where made the All-Tournament Team and won the Sportsmanship Award that earned him an invitation to the Chicago draft camp.
The Cougars now have 42 picks in the NBA draft, which places them behind league-leading UNLV with 49 and ahead of Utah with 41.
