Throughout Fall Camp, members of the BYU athletic media relations staff will introduce you to different players and coaches on this year's football team with a series of Q&A's. With the first practice of Fall Camp in the books, senior tight end Just Jory stopped by to talk with BYUCOUGARS.com's Jon Eyre.
Jory, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound tight end, begins his senior season at BYU and will be competing for a starting position during Fall Camp. Jory graduated last spring and will be taking classes, along with teammate Todd Mortense, at BYU's prestigious law school, beginning this Fall.
One of nine children, Jory was a National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete at Shoreline High School. He was a four-year letterwinner and helped lead his team to a 10-3 record as a senior. After serving a Church mission in Florianopolis, Brazil, Jory transfered to BYU from Walla Walla Community College. Jory started for the Warriors at tight end as a freshman.
Jory, a native of Shoreline, Wash., is married to the former Andrea Blake.
Q: What did you do this summer?
A: I stuck around here, went to spring term and also worked out with the team. I also went with my family to the Oregon Coast for a week-long vacation. I tried to surf, but the waves were horrible. So. I couldn't get any rides.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: My favorite food is Brazilian barbeque, called churrasco. Basically it's
barbequed meat on a stick. They serve it at some of the local Brazilian restaurants.
Q: If you could choose between the ability to fly, the strength of 100 men or
invisibility, which would you choose and why?
A: I think I would go with the ability to fly, then I wouldn't have to take road
trips. Life would be a lot easier.
Q: What is something interesting or unique about yourself?
A: I was a walk-on who later earned a scholarship. I guess something unique that
people probably wouldn't guess is that I am part Hispanic.
Q: Who is the craziest member of the team?
A: Brady Poppinga. Once he walks on the field he's got a couple loose screws and you don't always know if he's exactly sane.
Q: Do you have a pre-game ritual?
A: A used to put a big, red soda in the fridge before the game and drink it if we won.
Q: What is it like going to law school and playing football?
A: I don't know yet, ask me in a few weeks and I'll be able to tell you. We start in a few weeks, but I don't think it's going to be very fun.
Q: What is your most embarrassing moment on the football field?
A: I spike the ball when I was in high school. It cost us the game.
