PROVO -- Following a solid junior season, linebacker Colby Bockwoldt has emerged as one of the top outside linebackers in the Mountain West Conference. With his outstanding speed, and physical presence, he is expected to make an explosive impact in the Cougars' new-and-improved defense.

Bockwoldt, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior hails from Sunset, Utah. In high school, he earned all-state honors and was listed as one of the top-five recruits in the state. He received recruiting calls from many of the top programs in the country, including Nebraska, Stanford, Colorado, Arizona, Cal and Washington State--just to name a few. In addition to his stellar athletic accomplishments, which also includes a 5A State Championship in the 4x100-meter relay, Bockwoldt maintained a 4.0 grade-point average in high school.

Last season, Bockwoldt earned All-Mountain West Conference honorable-mention honors, recording 85 tackles on the season, including 51 solo takedowns. He registered 10 or more tackles in three games on the season, including a season-high 11 takedowns against Utah. In addition, he posted at least one tackle for a loss in eight different games.

Bockwoldt, a facilities management major, is married to the former Ashley Fowler. The couple celebrated their first anniversary in July.

Q: What did you do this summer?

A: I hung out with uncle, Coach Omer and worked my butt off in the weight

room.

Q: What is your favorite food and why?

A: Steak and potatoes and all the good stuff, because I'm a down-home,

country boy.

Q: What piece of equipment could you not live without on the football field?

A: Probably my helmet because I plan to do something else besides football

my whole life, and I need some smarts.

Q: If you could choose between the ability to fly, the strength of 100 men or invisibility, which would you choose and why?

A: I'd want to fly because I've always wanted to fly a jet. It would be fun.

Q: What is something unique or interesting about yourself?

A: I'm fast!

Q: Who is the craziest person on the team and why?

A: Without a doubt, Brady Poppinga, because he's crazy. I think that's the best word to describe him.

Q: Do you have any pre-game rituals?

A: Just relax.

Q: What is your most embarrassing moment on the football field?

A: There's a lot of them. Maybe in the 2000 Virginia game, the game was

really close and I missed a tackle in the fourth quarter after kickoff. It would have clinched the game. Luckily, we went into overtime and won the game.
