Salt Lake City, Utah -- BYU freshman Krystle Chamberlain led BYU with a 22-3 victory over Utah State Friday at the Utah Fall Classic hosted by the University of Utah.
"I was very pleased with our offense," head coach Gordon Eakin said. "They played really well today."
The Cougars got out to an early start with Chamberlain's triple down the left field line followed by another triple to the left center gap from senior Melinda Osborn. BYU scored five runs before the Aggies got their first out in the first inning. The team's explosive offense earned them nine runs to end the first inning.
After the amazing offense in the first inning, the Cougars got off to a shaky start defensively making two errors and giving up two runs.
The defensive play in the first inning didn't rattle BYU as Chamberlain answered back with another triple to start off the team in the second inning.
Another highlight came for BYU in the third-inning with a three-run homer from sophomore power-hitter Ashlyn Russell. In the same inning freshman Jodi Norton hit a solo home run in her first college game.
BYU only gave up one more run in the five-inning game that was called on the mercy rule.
"I'm not too concerned about our defense because we have players playing positions that they're not used to." We haven't had the time in five days of practice to really get them game ready."
Chamberlain ended the day 3-4 and recorded two triples in her first two college at-bats.
Coming off a big win against Utah State will give the team confidence going into the two games Saturday. BYU will face Southern Utah at 9:30 a.m. and the host team Utah at noon.
