SALT LAKE CITY -- The BYU softball team swept Salt Lake Community College in two games Thursday to extended their exhibition fall season record to 9-0.
In the second meeting between the two schools, the Cougars won the first game with a score of 4-2 in extra innings. The second game was called after the fourth inning at 7-0 because of the lack of light available to finish the game.
"We had great pitching and defensive performances," head coach Gordon Eakin said.
In the nine inning game, junior Niki Andersen pitched solid for the first seven innings of play and sophomore Brooke Boyce continued the remaining two innings to give the Cougars the victory.
Offensive highlights in game one came in the top of the ninth inning when junior Lauren Watson singled to start of the Cougar offense. Teammate Kate Walker followed with a bunt, making her way to first base off a Bruin throwing error. Sophomore Paige Paramore singled to score Watson at home. Freshman Krystle Chamberlain, who was the pinch runner for Walker, was called out at home off a fielder's choice from sophomore Ianeta Le`i. The Cougars came up big with a triple from freshman Jodi Norton to score Le`i and score two runs in the ninth to win game one.
The team will have the weekend to rest, due to the increasing number of injuries, before hosting Utah Valley State College on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.
