PROVO -- The BYU men's tennis team will compete in the ITA/Omni Hotels Regional Championship in Las Vegas Thursday Oct. 22-26.

The Regional Championship will mark the fourth fall event for the Cougars this season including the BYU Invitational and ITA All-American tournaments. The Cougars look forward to added success at the tournament.

"This is another big tournament for us," head coach Brad Pearce said. "It's tournaments like these that are so important for us. We need to do well in Las Vegas so we can qualify for the Intercollegiate Indoor in Dallas next month. That is the key."

BYU saw success last year as Carlos Lozano and Erik Nyman claimed first place in the doubles circuit of the Regional Championships. The second-seeded team was able to win both their semifinal and final match and qualify to participate in Nationals in Dallas.

Schools competing in the championship will include BYU, Montana State, Colorado, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Boise State, Air Force and host UNLV.

"Every team will be tough this year," Pearce said. "It should be a great match-up all around."

BYU senior Erik Nyman comes off a stellar performance in the ITA All-American in Chattanooga, Tenn. as he completed a strong finish in the consolation bracket of the tournament. The other seven BYU players ended their national tournament debut early as they struggled to make it past the pre-qualifying round.

"Our showing in the All-American by Nyman was a good thing for BYU athletics," Pearce said. "The whole team gave a great effort. Now we look forward to competing well in Las Vegas."
