LONG BEACH -- After the first day of competition at the Speedo Cup the BYU men's swimming and diving team is in second place with a score of 264 and the women are in seventh place with a score of 182.
The men trail only third ranked Stanford who jumped out to a large lead, scoring 583 points on the first day. While the women trail Oregon State who is in first place with a score of 357 as well as conference rivals Colorado State (fourth) and Air Force (seventh).
The men took second place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:22.51, and Kurt Mullen (50 free) and Zach Anderson (500 free) placed third in their events. The men also had a strong showing in the 200 IM with Gary Tan placing fourth and Diogo Yabe placing fifth.
The women's team was successful in the 200 free relay, placing third behind UC-San Diego and Oregon State. In the 50 free, Nichole Tolley placed 11th followed by Hannah Plamer who finished 12th.
