Shortstop Ranger Wiens of BYU was announced today as a Third-team Pre season All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball magazine.
The senior from Merced, Calif., was All-Mountain West Conference Second Team last season as a tri-captain. He led BYU with 27 multiple hit games and set a junior's record for Mountain West Conference games with a .415 league batting average. Wiens was among the NCAA leaders in two categories, a batting average of .405 and for his 25 doubles. He led the Cougars with 89 hits.
"We are proud of the way he has come along and look for big things again from Ranger this season," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "I consider him one of top players in our conference."
Law's charges begin the season the end of January, but first the coach has a busy month ahead.
Law will attend the annual college coaches convention in San Antonio, Jan. 2-5. From Jan. 8-11 he will help conduct the Major League Baseball Career Development seminar in Washington, D.C., his 12th year participating in that event. And on Jan. 17-18 he will attend the Cubs Convention in Chicago for his fourth year.
Law had a 14-year professional baseball career with six different teams and is now in his fourth year as BYU's head coach.
