BYU makes a great catch after signing three new softball recruits

PROVO, Utah -- The BYU women's softball team made a great catch during the early signing period when three high school seniors signed letters of intent to play for the Cougars next season.

The trio joining the Cougars for the 2004-05 season will consist of Daniela Urincho from Corona Calif., Lindi Kennedy from Las Vegas, Nev. and Emi Snow from Miliani, Hawai`i.

Urincho is one of the nation's top pitchers who led her high school team to the 2003 California State Championship. She is a versatile player who can play multiple positions and will be an offensive threat in the lineup for the Cougars. Currently, Urincho pitches for the Gordon's Panthers 18-and-under gold team. Gordon's Panthers have won 11 national championships and is one of the nation's top ASA teams. Urincho attended Norco High School and is the daughter of Victor and Irma Urincho.

"Daniela is the real deal and will not only help elevate our softball program, but she has her priorities in order," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "She comes from a great family and is a perfect fit for our team and university."

Kennedy is an infielder/outfielder who is very athletic and will strengthen the team with her excellent knowledge of the game. She is a strong player with a powerful bat, has been well coached and gained valuable experience while playing with the Las Vegas Rage 18-and-under gold team. Kennedy attended Cimarron Memorial High School and is the daughter of Jeff and Bobbi Kennedy.

"We look for great things out of Lindi right out of the chute," Eakin said. "She has a great family and is a nice addition to our team."

Snow is a very athletic player with a lot of natural power and ability. She will help the team with her strong arm and quickness. Snow is a fearless competitor who will strengthen the team in the outfield and catcher positions. While playing for American Pastime 18-and-under gold team out of California, Snow has developed into an excellent player and is a great student of the game. Snow attended Kamehameha High School and is the daughter of Stan and Loni Snow. Her father Stan received his bachelor's degree from BYU in 1983 and her brother also attended BYU.

"We're looking for big things from Emi," Eakin said. "She comes from a great family with strong BYU ties."

BYU is still seeking a left-handed speed hitter to balance the Cougar lineup and complete the 2004-05 roster.

The BYU softball team will begin its 2004 season at the Hawai`i Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Feb. 4.
