Wiens and Wilkes Named Co-Captains

Senior shortstop Ranger Wiens and senior catcher Adam Wilkes were selected as BYU co-captains for the 2004 season.

Wiens, a third-team pre-season All-American who also shared the honor during the 2003 season, set a Mountain West Conference record for juniors with his .415 batting average last year. A 2003 second team All-MWC selection, Wiens led the Cougars in 2003 in hits with 89 and multiple hit games with 27. He finished with four home runs, 25 doubles and 55 RBI.

A University of Nevada (Reno) transfer, Wiens joined the Cougars in 2002. After several outstanding defensive plays in the MWC Tournament, he was named to the 2002 All-Mountain West Tournament Team. The Merced, Calif., native finished his sophomore season hitting .318 with three home runs, 14 doubles and 32 RBI.

Wilkes appeared in 30 games, starting 19 of them, with the Cougars in 2003. He delivered several clutch hits, including an RBI double in the 7-6 victory over Utah in the survival game of the MWC Tournament. Wilkes finished the year hitting .254 with nine RBI. The Cougar Club honored the Tucson, Ariz., native as a scholar athlete in 2002.
