SEATTLE -- The BYU distance squad broke two schools records and qualified runners in seven events for the NCAA Championships this past Friday and Saturday at the University of Washington Indoor Invitational.
The Cougar women not only broke the school record in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) but also lead the nation with their time of 11:06.91, about nine seconds faster than the automatic qualifying time of 11:15.00.
This finish led the Cougars to a first place win over Stanford's team of 11:17.94 and UCLA's 11:21.15.
"This is the first race for each of these girls," women's distance coach Patrick Shane said. "They have the capacity to run under 11 minutes and I know can improve significantly before Nationals."
Adding to the women's new DMR school record, teammate senior All-American Michaela Mannova also broke the school record and currently leads the nation in the 3,000-meter with her time of 9:04.06, giving her an automatic qualifying time for NCAA's.
"The automatic time for this event is 9:16.00," Shane said. "She is well below that and I expect her to perform well at Nationals."
Following Mannova in the 3,000 was All-American Laura Turner who ran 9:31.64 hitting the NCAA provisional time.
Additionally, junior All-American Kassi Andersen set a new strong provisional mark in the one mile with her time of 4:44.09, which places her third on the BYU all-time record list.
Similarly, senior Aneta Lemiesz finished the 800-meter race in 2:06.24 hitting the NCAA provisional mark with less than a second away from the automatic mark.
"Overall this weekend was very productive," Shane said. "We are going to lead the conference and the nation in these events. "
On the men's side of the track they had solid races against tough competition. The DMR team set a provisional time of 9:41.00, about four seconds away from an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA's.
The highlight of the men's team at UW was junior Bryan Lindsey's 3,000-meter time of 7:58.22 which gives him a strong provisional NCAA qualification.
"Bryan's time is a very fast provisional," men's distance coach Ed Eyestone said. "Although he was third in the collegiate race, this time has never not gotten into nationals. He is an All-American in the 1500 and he will come back in a few weeks and run the one mile to see which is better for him to run at Nationals."
The teams look forward to some training time back in Provo before they head back to Washington to compete again in two weeks.
"We are prepared to work hard, no matter what," Shane said.
