Second Half of MWC Race Brings Wyoming and CSU to Marriott Center

After going 1-1 on the road last week, the women's basketball team is at home this week starting the second half of MWC action. BYU hosts Wyoming on Thurs., Feb. 12 and CSU on Sat., Feb. 14. Start times are 7 p.m., and 4 p.m. respectively.

Last Game Recap

The women's team picked up its second league win with a 82-50 rout over San Diego State on Saturday afternoon. BYU put an impressive game plan together that saw balanced scoring from at least three players that put up double figure points. It was the team's first game in which they shot over 50 percent (52) for the game and the 82 points tied for the high of the season. Danielle Cheesman and Nancy Seljaas scored 13 points each with Ambrosia Anderson coming off the bench for 12 points. The Cougars outrebounded the Aztecs 34 to 29.

MWC Opponents this week

Wyoming

The Cowgirls of Wyoming have compiled an 8-12, 4-3 record to date which puts them in third place in the currently conference standings. On the road, Wyoming has a 1-1 record. The team just lost to New Mexico in Laramie by a score of 56 to 61. Ashley Elliott, who has started in all games for the Cowgirls tops the list in scoring with 16.9 points per game. She also contributes with 4.7 rebounds a game. Michelle Lieber is the team's leading rebounder, grabbing 6.4 boards per game. Wyoming is currently shooting 35 percent from the field, 71 percent from the foul line and 32 from behind the arc, and they are averaging 52 points a game. Head Coach Joe Legerski, a former assistant at the University of Utah is in his first season at the helm of the Cowgirls program.

Last Meeting: In the earlier meeting between the two conference foes in Laramie, the homestanding Cowgirls picked up the 57-50 win, making it the second straight time that Wyoming had beaten the Cougars in the Multipurpose Gym. In that road trip the Cougars lost both conference games and went 0-2 in league play.

Colorado State

The Rams are coming into conference play on a two game winning streak deafeting both Air Force and New Mexico in Ft. Collins. CSU, who is 12-8 and 3-4 on the year, plays at Utah on Thursday night before the matchup with BYU on Saturday afternoon. They are in fourth place in league standings. Melissa Dennett is one of four players scoring in double figures. She's tallying 13.4 points and 6.9 rebounds, followed by Vanessa Espinoza who contributes 12.4 points and leads the way in the rebound category grabbing a team high 7.7 boards a game. Lindsay Thomas and Joy Jenkins are also scoring in double figures with 12.1 for Thomas and 11.1 for Jenkins. The team shoots 44 percent from the field, 69 percent from the free throw line and 35 percent from three-point range. They tally 66.9 points a game, and hold oppoenents to 65 points.

Last Meeting: The team's have already met once this season in Ft. Collins where the Rams picked up a two-point 52-54 victory over the Cougars. In the Marriott Center CSU has an 11-13 record winning in Provo 81-64 on 1/10/02.
