LAS VEGAS -- Spring Soccer began last weekend for the BYU women's soccer team as the Cougars traveled to Las Vegas, Nevada for games with UNLV and UC Riverside.

BYU came away from the trip with a 3-0 win over the Rebels and a 1-1 tie with UCR.

"I was very pleased with the players and their performance," said BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood. "The team has been working really hard since January."

Both games were played on Saturday, Feb. 21, with two 40-minute halves instead of the usual 45-minutes half teams use during the fall season.

Against UCR, Krissa Campbell scored the first goal for the Cougars as teammate Jaime Rendich sent a cross pass to Campbell who finished a one-on-one opportunity with the Riverside goalkeeper to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. UCR would eventually tie the game for the final score of 1-1.

Playing against UNLV, the Cougars jumped on the Rebels early and kept the pressure coming. Davia King recorded the first goal converting on a pass from Charlene Lui and Amberlea Anderson.

Campbell again got in on the action as Katie Gabbart played the ball into Campbell who again finished on a one-on-one opportunity with the Rebel keeper.

The final goal belonged to Kim Martins who stole the ball from the Rebel backline and scored on a one-on-one opportunity.

"Spring ball is a good opportunity for everyone to get a chance to play," said Rockwood. "Some girls even got their first start in a Cougars uniform which is neat for them."

Also of note is the return of defender Rachelle Dixon who is back with the Cougars after serving a church mission. "Rachelle played as if she had never missed a beat," said Rockwood.

The Cougars continue their Spring Schedule this weekend hosting the BYU Indoor Invitational. Attending will be Utah, Weber State and Dixie College. BYU plays its first game at 1:30 p.m. in the Indoor Practice Facility against Dixie on Saturday, Feb. 28.
