PROVO, Utah -- BYU and its softball head coach Gordon Eakin announced reassignments of duties for coaches Mindy Hanson and Vaughn Alvey Tuesday.
"We are a team of coaches that thrive on each others strengths and weaknesses," Eakin said. "This gives us a balance that is exciting for the future of BYU softball."
Hanson was named BYU softball recruiting coordinator and defense coordinator coach. The change has come based on the great job Hanson has done over the last two years. Eakin has great confidence in Hanson to take over the recruiting -- one of the most important tasks the coaching staff does.
"I've been very protective of recruiting and a year ago I could never have thought of handing over that responsibility," Eakin said. "But after working with Mindy, she has all of the attributes to recruit future athletes and help our program grow even more."
Along with recruiting, Hanson will also take on the duty as a defensive coordinator coach. The BYU softball program has worked hard to develop their offensive game and Hanson will pick up the defensive end to make sure the defense performs as well as the offense.
For Alvey, he receives the new title of associate head coach. This title is much deserved for the presence he brings to the BYU softball program.
After spending 17 years and winning eight state championships at Alta High School, Eakin believes Alvey is qualified to be the head coach of any Division I program.
As a player, Alvey represented the USA as a pitcher on two national teams in the Pan-American games and was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in November 2001.
"He brings with him ingredients to our team that are critical to our success," Eakin said. "And for those reasons has been elevated to associate head coach."
As the BYU coaching staff enters into their second season together, they will continue to build the foundation and take the BYU softball program to the next level.
