PROVO -- The BYU women's tennis team jumped from a No. 25 ranking to No. 14 today as the ITA released its national rankings giving the Cougars their highest spot of the 2004 campaign.
"We are really excited for this," head coach Craig Manning said. "Our girls have worked so hard this season and I am so proud of them. We just have to keep working hard."
Thus far in the season the Cougars have a winning record of 12-4. The only losses have come against top ranked teams like No. 3 California, No. 7 Washington, No. 21 Notre Dame and No. 24 Oklahoma. However, BYU has defeated teams ranked as high as No. 5 and No. 14 (USC and William and Mary).
Leading the Cougars to many of their wins has been senior Barbora Zahnova. Zahnova is currently ranked No. 32 in singles play and No. 20 in doubles action this season. Zahnova's biggest win came last week over No. 6-ranked Julie Coin of Clemson in Provo.
"Barbora has really played so well this season," Manning said. "She has has some huge wins for us, but the entire team has really come together to help with the wins. All of the girls work so well with eachother and show so much support. That has really helped us. It's been a team effort."
