LAS VEGAS (May 14, 20040 -- BYU leads both the men's and the women's standings after the third day of competition at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by UNLV at Myron Partridge Stadium/Sheila Tarr Smith Field.
The Cougar women have staked out to a 40-point lead over second place Colorado State after posting first place finishes in the 10,000 meters, the 3,000 meter steeplechase, and in the long jump. BYU finished the day with 93 points, while CSU is second at 53, and defending champion San Diego State third with 45 points. Air Force is fourth (37), New Mexico fifth (19), Utah sixth (11), host UNLV seventh (8), and Wyoming eighth (7).
On the men's side, BYU holds a 34-point lead over Colorado State after wins in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the discus, and the javelin. The Cougars stand with 93 points, while CSU posted 59 for second, and Air Force is third at 51.5. New Mexico is fourth with 40.5 points, Wyoming fifth at 21, and Utah is sixth with eight points.
The Cougars took a commanding 29-point lead over Colorado State in the women's team competition after a first- through fourth-place finish in the 10,000 meters. Senior Emily Raymond won the 10,000 title with a time of 36:08.50. Freshman Whitney McDonald finished second with a time of 36:45.77, while freshman Suzanna Logan finished third in a time of 37:29.51. Junior Jami Caldwell finished the four-way BYU sweep in a time of 37:30.56.
The BYU distance domination continued in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with the Cougar women picking up another 27 points to take a 51-point lead in the team competition. Lisa Antonelli won the competition with a time of 10:29.62, followed by second-place finisher Amber Harper (10:33.19). Junior Rena Williams turned in a season-best time of 10:48.49 to finish fourth, while Kristy Barrus also punched in a season-best time of 10:55.78 in the event.
The Cougars picked up 17 more team points in the long jump, led by freshman Amy Menlove who won the event with a regional qualifying distance of 19-11. Anna-Lee Walcott finished fourth with a qualifying marks of 19-06, while Lindsey Sommer earned two team points with her seventh-place finish. Sommer recorded a season-best 18-05 in the event.
In other event finals, senior Malita Bingham finished ninth in the discus with a mark of 149-01. Alicia Thompson finished eighth in the pole vault with a final clearance of 11-06.50. Tiffany Rasmussen and Maret Komarova finished fifth and sixth respectively in the javelin. Rasmussen recorded a mark of 137-04, while Komarova turned in a 134-10 performance.
In the only running event final for the Cougar men, junior Matthew Adams led a one, two, four finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Adams crossed the line in a NCAA qualifying time of 8:59.62. Sophomore Josh McAdams finished second with a time of 8:59.72. Senior Richard Evanson was fourth in a time of 9:15.57. After taking three of the top-four spots in the event, the Cougars took a 23-point lead over Colorado State in the team competition.
Brothers Niklas and Daniel Arrhenius recorded a one-two finish in the shot put, posting a distance of 188-02 and 175-03 respectively, while Matt Hickman won the javlin with a season-best mark of 210-08 in the javelin. Teammate Mat Johnston finished second with a distance of 201-04.
The Cougars also picked up four more points in the team competition with a fifth-place performance in the high jump. Freshman Bryce Nielsen cleared a height of 6-07. BYU added 10 more points in the long jump after Matt Anderson posted a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 22-10.50. Rodrigo Mendes finished sixth (22-09.25) and Devin Scoresby finished seventh in the event (22-07.75).
Finals in eight field events and 20 running events will take place on Saturday at UNLV's Myron Partridge Stadium/Sheila Tarr Smith Field, beginning at 8 a.m. (PDT).
