PROVO -- Victor Batista of the BYU men's volleyball team guided his Dominican Republic club team to the 2004 USA Open Championship in Atlanta and earned MVP honors, May 29-June 5.
Batista played for Bameso in the Men's Open Gold Division. He earned All-Tournament team honors along with two of his teammates and was named the most valuable player.
Bameso competed in the highest division against teams from across North America. They went undefeated in pool play, earning a bye in the double elimination tournament. After winning two straight, they faced team TPC of the Great Lakes region. Bameso won in three games, sending TPC to the losers bracket. After TPC won the losers bracket, the teams faced off again with Bameso winning in four games to earn the championship.
Batista played middle hitter for BYU this past season, helping guide the Cougars to the national championship. The Cougars are expecting big things from Batista in 2005.
