Cougars Enjoy Shortened Practice

PROVO -- After three days of long, grueling practices to start the week, the BYU football team conducted a short practice with just light contact Thursday morning.

"We've gone really hard the past three days," head coach Gary Crowton said. "We've scrimmaged three times this week, so they just needed a shorter practice so they can get their legs back."

But the practice wasn't devoid of contact. Defensive lineman Shaun Nua looked like he was still fired up from the Wednesday night's practice when he leveled running back Nathan Meikle and exclaimed, "I just can't help myself!"

During the practice the team worked mainly on the running game and short passing game. Antwaun Harris impressed the coaches with his good hands during seven-on-seven drills, hauling in a number of passes during the drill.

"Antwaun has good hands and an ability to run after the catch," Crowton said. "I see a lot of potential there. Hopefully he'll feel comfortable with what we're trying to do and it will show up during the games."

Thursday's practice was open to the public and 410 fans showed up to watch. The final practice open to the public will be on Tuesday, August 24. Following that practice, the team will begin preparations for its first game against Notre Dame on September 4.
