PROVO -- After completing just one season for the BYU women's basketball team, Heather and Hollie Hansen have determined they will no longer participate in basketball at the collegiate level.
Heather has a degenerative back injury that would worsen if she continues to play. Her decision to not play basketball came after consulting with a local neuro surgeon, team physician, athletic trainer and family members. In light of Heather's condition, twin sister Hollie decided she would not play if she couldn't compete with her sister. There is a possibility that Hollie Hansen will change her mind and return to the program at a later time.
"I'm very sad that this has happened to Heather," said a disappointed Jeff Judkins, head coach for the Cougar women's program. "I know how much Heather had been working during the off-season to get better. We were counting on them being a part of our program for several years. They will be missed."
During their first season of play, Heather competed in 18 games tallying 37 points for an average of 2.1 ppg, while Hollie played in 27 of 29 games, started in three and averaged 1.1 points per game and 1.7 rebounds.
With their departure Coach Judkins indicated other members of the team will have to step up and contribute to the success of the women's basketball program.
