SALT LAKE -- The BYU women's softball team finished the weekend schedule maintaining their undefeated mark in the fall season.

On Oct. 1, BYU scored victories over both UVSC and Utah State in Salt Lake City winning 5-0 and 4-1 respectively.

Against UVSC (2nd-year Div.I), senior Niki Anderson started for the Cougars on the mound and pitched five solid innings with junior Summer Tobias finishing the shutout victory. Juniors, Neta Le`i and Paige Paramore were instrumental offensively with each hitting a double to score four runs in the same inning. The Cougars played very well defensively against a tough UVSC team.

"UVSC really surprised us," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "They have a good team over there."

In the second game of the day, BYU beat Utah State 4-1. Junior Brooke Boyce started for the Cougars and pitched very well with Tobias pitching the final inning. Great pitching and solid defense once again was significant in the Cougar win.

Oct. 2 included contests against Utah and another victory for BYU over UVSC. The 4-1 victory was highlighted by a sixth-inning solo home run by senior Lauren Watson. Once again BYU played great defensively with solid pitching from Tobias and Anderson.

The second game of the day saw the Cougars fall behind early with the University of Utah jumping on BYU 3-0 in the first inning. BYU freshman pitcher, Daniella Urincho, gave up those initial runs, but pitched three solid scoreless innings afterwards. BYU managed a single run in the fourth making it 3-1. The score remained until the seventh inning with two outs and two on base for BYU sophomore Jodi Norton. Hitting a double to score two runs, Norton evened up the score, and BYU preserved the tie with the game not going into extra innings.

Throughout the weekend, BYU showed consistency in both their pitching and their solid defense.

"One strength on our team has always been our offense, but it just wasn't clicking for us over the weekend," coach Eakin said. "But our pitching and solid defense stepped it up to help us win."

BYU's next game is scheduled for Thursday, October 7, 4 p.m. at Miller Park.
