PROVO -- Brigham Young University announced today it will open its search for an athletic director, beginning immediately. With the consolidation of the men's and women's athletic programs now nearing completion, the university is prepared to hire a director.
"The transitional leadership team that has been in place since September has done a superb job of consolidating the two departments and building the foundation for a strong athletic program for our athletes," said BYU Advancement Vice President K. Fred Skousen.
"As a university, we particularly thank Peter Pilling, Tom Holmoe, Brian Santiago and Janie Penfield," Skousen said. "Their involvement during the self-study, which was conducted this spring and summer, and then their leadership throughout the transitional period has been exceptional."
Skousen said the leadership team has established a well defined strategy for the department, allowing for responsible budget management, consistent treatment of student athletes and clear accountability. The team, working with the entire department, also has focused on the importance of character development and academic progress for all student athletes.
With this foundation established, Skousen said the university is now ready to consider candidates for the athletic director position, which should be filled by March 2005. "We will consider several strong, internal candidates, as well as qualified external candidates," he said.
Applicants should have a clear understanding of and a commitment to the mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and BYU. In addition to excellent leadership experience and skills, preferably in a university environment, they should also have experience dealing with the media, an understanding of personnel issues for coaches and athletic department staff, a proven ability in fund raising, an understanding of and commitment to men's and women's athletic teams and a demonstrated ability in athletic marketing and promotion.
Applicants with advanced formal education in business, athletic administration, communication and/or physical education are preferred. Also, experience in competitive sports at the collegiate and/or professional level is desired.
Candidates who wish to apply or obtain more information may contact the BYU Advancement Office at 801-422-2640 or at http://jobs.byu.edu. Deadline for receipt of applications is Jan. 15, 2005.
