PROVO -- BYU track star Amy Menlove was named the Mountain West Conference Athlete of the Week on Tuesday after a strong showing in three events during last week's Cougar Indoor Invitational.

The five-foot-six sophomore won all three events in which she competed, including the pentathlon, the long jump and the 60-meter hurdles. Menlove also received NCAA provisional qualifying marks in the pentathlon and long jump.

BYU women's track coach Craig Poole said Menlove did a great job last week.

"She's a real student of the sport," Poole said. "She works very hard at what she does."

Menlove won the pentathlon with 3,866 points, more than 200 points better than the second place finisher. She also set a career best in the long jump by leaping 20 feet six inches. She won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.62, after a qualifying time of 8.58.

The Sandy native surprised Poole by winning the pentathlon on Thursday. Poole said he wasn't sure Menlove could even finish the 800 meter race in the pentathlon, but she won the race and eventually the entire pentathlon.

Menlove's determination and hard work make her one of the leaders on the women's track team. Poole said Menlove is successful in every thing she does both on and off the track.

"She's an outstanding person in every sense of the word," he said.

Menlove came to BYU after a stellar prep career at Alta High School. She holds the state high school record in the long jump and was the state champion for three consecutive years in the 100 meters.

During her freshman year, Menlove qualified for the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Nationals, where she placed eleventh overall, and was named the MWC Freshman of the Year and Academic All-MWC.
