A month from now BYU's baseball team will begin play, so it's not surprising that practices are well along.

The team officially began practices earlier this month in preparation for the season which starts in a three-game series on Feb. 17 (Thurs.) at UC Irvine in California.

Coach Vance Law welcomes back 14 lettermen, five of whom were starters on last year's 28-30 club. Law has been busy conducting practices which have been both at the Indoor Practice Facility earlier this month and now outside this week at Miller Park.

"Practices have gone very well," said Law. "We have accomplished a lot in the new facility and have gotten to be outside lately because of the nice weather. We are on target with our goals."

Prior to beginning practice, Law was at Leesburg, Va., earlier this month to participate in Major League training sessions for 13 of the past 14 years. This weekend he flies to Chicago to be a part of his fourth 20th Annual Cubs Convention fanfest as one of 35 former players at this year's event.

All proceeds from the Cubs Convention benefit Cubs Care, the charitable arm of the Chicago Cubs and a fund for the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation. Over the last 19 years, this event has raised more than $4.5 million for charity.
