PROVO -- The 22nd-ranked BYU women's tennis team busted out the whooping sticks today and handed 33rd-ranked Wisconsin their fourth loss of the season.
The day began with some solid play from the doubles court. BYU's 44th ranked doubles tandem of sophmore Lauren Jones and freshman Dolly Chang cruised to a 8-5 victory over Wisconsin's Martin and McGaffigan. The Cougars would win the next two doubles matches to complete the doubles sweep.
On the singles court, it would be freshman Anastasia Sourkova who would draw first blood. Playing at three singles, she undid Wisconsin's Martin 6-0,6-0. Minutes later, junior Olga Boulytcheva gave the Cougars a three point lead with a 6-1,6-4 win over 92nd ranked Caitlin Burke.
But it would be the play of Lauren Jones that assured the Cougar win. Jones dropped it like it was hot today, beating Wisconsin's number one singles, and former top ranked singles player, Katie McGaffigan 6-3,6-0.
"I usually don't like to single out players," said head coach Craig Manning. "But Lauren played exceptionally well, as did Olga and Anastasia. I am surprised at how well our top 4 played. Wisconsin is a great team, I am pleased with how they played today."
BYU junior Sophia Holden and freshman Jennifer Miccoli also chipped in wins, as Holden won 6-2,6-1 while Miccoli took the long road, winning 6-4,2-6,10-5.
The 7-1 Cougars head out to South Carolina next week for a brutal two-match road trip. BYU plays 16th-ranked Clemson on Friday followed by 30th-ranked South Carolina on Saturday.
