ALBUQUERQUE -- Two huge ninth innings proved decisive as BYU split a doubleheader with New Mexico, losing 6-5 and winning 19-6, Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.
The twinbill marked the first two Mountain West Conference games for both teams. The Cougars' record moved to 12-5-1 (1-1, MWC) while the Lobos moved to 11-10 (1-1).
In game one, New Mexico centerfielder Matt Foote hit a walk-off single with bases loaded in the ninth to cap a four-run, come-from-behind win. The Lobos ended BYU's eight-game winning streak.
BYU played long-ball, getting all five of its game-one runs on four home runs in the losing effort. The Lobos started the scoring in the second inning on a RBI ground out by Jeff Grady. The Cougars responded in the third inning when Sean McNaughton hit a two-run homer and Apana Nakayama followed with a solo shot two batters later.
UNM narrowed the lead to one run when Jordan Pacheco hit a solo home run in the fifth. BYU added two solo shots by Brandon Taylor and Ryan Chambers to extend the lead to 5-2. The score remained the same going into the ninth inning. That is when the Lobos sent nine batters to the plate and won the game on a two-out single.
Game two of the doubleheader was a see-saw battle until late into the game. New Mexico started the scoring in the first inning, cashing in on four singles to give the Lobos an early 2-0 lead. The Cougars bounced back in the fourth, with a Jeff Hiestand RBI double. Hiestand was pushed in by a Taylor RBI single up the middle. In the fifth inning, Chambers hit a go-ahead solo home run.
BYU took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. New Mexico started the inning with a Foote double. Foote was knocked in by a Pacheco RBI single. Garrick Haymore then re-took the lead with one swing of the bat with a two-run shot to put the Lobos ahead 5-4. It was the Cougars' turn to come up big in the late innings, as they took the lead in the eighth inning when pinch hitter Casey Nelson hit a two-out RBI single to put BYU ahead for good. New Mexico loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to score any runs as BYU's Josh Barrett struck out Ryan Barba to end the threat.
Then the Cougars erupted in the ninth inning. BYU hit seven doubles, two home runs and scored 12 in the inning. The seven doubles were one short of the NCAA record of eight. Chambers, Ben Saylor each collected two doubles in the innings while Apana Nakayama doubled and homered in the ninth. The Cougars ended the game with nine doubles and three home runs.
