COLORADO SPRINGS -- Brandon Christiansen and Jeff Hiestand of BYU have been selected as the Mountain West Conference Pitcher and Player of the Week, respectively, for their performances last week.

Christiansen, a 6-2, 225, junior pitcher from West Jordan, improved his record to 2-0 with a 3.71 earned run average after pitching a complete game in a 7-2 victory last Saturday over Utah.

"It was a whale of an effort," said BYU Coach Vance Law of Christiansen's first complete game of the season, the third for BYU's team this season.

The transfer from the College of Southern Idaho had four innings of retiring Utah in order. He worked his way out of a jam in the seven inning with the leadoff man on second and no outs by fielding a grounder and throwing out the Ute as he tried to advance to third base. He had three assists in the game and threw 108 pitches.

Hiestand, a 5-11, 215, senior from Chino, Calif., improved his batting average from .342 to .376 in the three-game sweep of Utah and another victory over Utah Valley State.

Hiestand's slugging percentage for the week was 1.214 and has led the Cougars in hitting in 10 consecutive games. He His two homers were a two-run homer in the fifth-inning to put BYU up 5-4 in its 6-5 victory over Utah and a two-run shot in the seventh of the 7-2 victory over Utah.
