CORVALLIS -- Game one of BYU's two-game stint at No. 17 Oregon State was suspended due to rain Monday night.
The Beavers (19-4) were leading 5-1 going into the bottom of the fifth when play was suspended. Weather permitting the two teams will finish game one Tuesday at 1 p.m. PST before playing the second game of the series directly thereafter.
The Cougars, now 17-5-1 (5-1, Mountain West Conference), faced a tough pitcher in OSU starter Jonah Nickerson. Nickerson came into the game with a 4-0 record and an ERA of 1.05. He struck out eight BYU batters in the five innings of work. BYU regulars Jeff Hiestand--last week's MWC player of the week--and Ben Saylor did not start, but both made the trip.
The Cougars' only run of the game came on a Sean McNaughton RBI single in the top of the third. McNaughton and Kory Knell each had two singles for the Cougars.
Oregon State had a big run in the bottom of the fourth, grabbing three runs--only one being earned--on three hits, two errors, a walk and a hit batsman. Ryan Gipson's RBI double in the fourth inning is the game's only extra-base hit.
After Tuesday's twinbill, BYU will return home for a three-game, weekend set with the Air Force Academy at Larry H. Miller Field beginning Thursday.
