PROVO, Utah (April 7th, 2005)--The Cougars sent archrival Utah packing today with their 4-3 win preserving their perfect 7-0 home record.
After losing the doubles point early, the BYU men's tennis team stormed back in singles to take the lead and eventually the win. The victory gives BYU a 2-1 conference record while Utah falls to 0-3.
The Utes took the early lead with wins at 1 and 3 doubles. Dominik Kaufhold and James Ludlow would prevent the Utah sweep with their 8-3 victory at the No. 2 spot.
In singles, Nima Roshan busted out the whooping stick winning his match in straight sets 6-2,6-4. That would tie the score at 1-1. Then Utah picked up a win at No. 2 singles over the usually rock solid James Ludlow 6-2,6-3. But Jeff Das, who has been picking up some heat in his last couple of matches, blasted Utah's Mann 6-4,7-6. That would even the score at 2 apiece.
Then Utah grabbed the lead with LaPorte's tough three set loss 7-6,6-7,10-6. The lead wouldn't last as the sizzling Chip Hand won at No. 5 singles 6-4,6-4. The win would give Hand his 11th win in his last 12 matches.
The deciding match would be in the hands of Dominik Kaufhold, and he didn't disappoint. Flashing back to February 25th, Kaufhold stayed cool under pressure and with all eyes on him won the thrilling match and gave BYU the win over the University of Denver. Today was no different. Kaufhold managed to hang onto the first set 7-6 and then in the second he easily won 6-2 to preserve BYU's perfect 7-0 home record.
BYU advances to 14-5 while the Utes fall to 12-6 on the year. The Cougars take on No. 59 New Mexico tomorrow at 1:30 on the outdoor courts. If the weather is bad, the match will be held on the indoor courts at 2:00.
