BYU junior righthander Dave Horlacher and freshman second baseman Sean McNaughton have been named to conference and national honors.

Horlacher was named Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week, while McNaughton was named to the midseason Freshman All-America squad by Baseball America magazine.

Horlacher, from St. George, Utah, recorded BYU's first complete game, nine-inning shutout in two years in game two vs. UNLV last week, for his third victory of the season. In 9.0 innings on the mound, he gave up no runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters in BYU's 5-0 win, giving the Cougars sole possession of first place in the conference.

Horlacher lowered his earned run average from 3.60 to 2.94, struck the side out in order in the seventh.

"To throw a shutout in these conditions (30-40 mph winds) is amazing, " said BYU Coach Vance Law. "The intensity where we needed it was on the hill with Horlacher." He threw a one-hitter through the first four innings.

Horlacher got a first-inning pickoff to retire the only batter he hit in the game. He gave up one hit in the fifth and two in the eighth. He threw 126 pitches. UNLV stranded seven runners on base.

"(Horlacher) kept pumping strikes and he did it for nine innings," said UNLV Coach Buddy Gouldsmith. "I thought he had good command of his fastball." It was the first complete-game shutout thrown by a single pitcher against UNLV this season.

McNaughton, from Lakewood, Wash., is currently batting .360 and leads the team with 50 hits, 12 doubles, four triples and a .719 slugging percentage.

McNaughton has been turning lots of heads as BYU's leadoff batter. He tied a league and school record by hitting two triples in the 18-5 victory over Air Force. He hit three doubles in game two at New Mexico State, tying his older brother Troy who went on the play AAA ball after BYU.

McNaughton also hit a pair of homers in game two at New Mexico State. He hit a leadoff homer in the first inning in game one against Utah Valley State. In game one at New Mexico he put BYU on the scoreboard with a two-run homer and tried to extend his triple in the ninth to an inside the park homer. He is one of BYU's fastest baserunners and has incredible bat speed.
