PROVO -- BYU sophomore Rachel Newren claimed her first-ever Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Month Award for her performance in the month of April, when she captured her first collegiate career victory at the BYU Dixie Classic in St. George, Utah April 4-5.
Battling fierce winds on day one of the tournament, Newren finished the first round three strokes back of the leader. Newren began the second round the next day with an eagle and a birdie on the first two holes and finished the final round with a 1-under-par 71, her second-lowest score at BYU.
Newren's victory marks the first individual victory for a BYU women's golfer since Carrie Summerhays' title in 2001. Newren is currently ranked No. 63 nationally in Golfweek Magazine, and has recorded five top-10 and three top-5 finishes this season.
Newren will lead the Cougars as they head into the MWC Championship in Sunriver, Ore. April 21-23.
