PROVO -- Women's swimming assistant coach Shari Skabelund was recently named Assistant Coach of the Year at the annual Y Awards held at BYU. Skabelund was one of 26 coaches nominated for the award given annually to recognize an outstanding BYU assistant coach.
Skabelund will be heading into her 17th year as the assistant coach for the Cougars. She was the first swimmer to finish four years of eligibility at BYU and won individual titles in the 100-yard IM in 1978 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1980.
Before coming to BYU, Skabelund was the head coach of Springville High School from 1982-1987. During her tenure, the girls won the 3A title in 1985 and 1986. In 1987, her girls took second with the men placing fourth.
She is married to Grant Skabelund and they have four children, Analyn, Andrew, Natalya and Joshua. Her oldest daughter, Analyn, swam for the Cougars from 2003-2005.
