PROVO -- BYU's women's golf team earned an invitation to the 2005 NCAA West Regional in Las Cruces, New Mexico on May 5-7 at the New Mexico State University Golf Course.
The invitation for the No. 36 Cougars was their second consecutive invitation and the fifth in the last six years.
"We've played hard all year to earn the right to be here," BYU head coach Sue Nyhus said. "We're excited for the opportunity to play our way into the championship round. We're going to give it all we got."
The Cougars earned the No. 14 seed and will be one of 21 teams in New Mexico attempting to earn a spot in the NCAA Championship round. Three regional tournaments (East, Central and West) will determine the championship field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championship competition. The top eight teams and two individuals will advance from each region to the championship finals held at Sunriver Resort on the Meadows Course in Sunriver, Oregon, home to the Mountain West Conference championship the past three years.
Last year the Cougars were the No. 15 seed and earned a 13th-place finish, their best since 1994.
Four of the six teams from the MWC earned invitations including 2005 MWC champion UNLV as the No. 10 seed in the West Regional. UNLV is joined by BYU (No. 14) and Colorado State (No. 15) while New Mexico is the No. 3 seed in the Central Regional.
