San Diego, Calif (April 28, 2005)--The No. 23 women's tennis team didn't have much of a problem in the opening rounds of the Mountain West Conference Championship as they sweep the Falcons 5-0.
The day started off with a lot of rain which pushed the 2 p.m. match time back to 4p.m. But that didn't seem to affect the Mountain West Conference regular season champs. They simply went out and took care of business. BYU got wins at both the 2 and 3 doubles to get the early lead. The doubles duos of Jones/Chang and Sourkova/Miccoli won the matches with identical 8-1 scores.
In singles play, it was simply down hill for BYU. The team hardly broke a sweat as they picked up 4 quick wins. Sourkova ended first with a 6-1,6-1 win and right behind her was Jones's 6-3,6-2 victory at 1 singles. That brought the tally up to 3-0 in BYU's favor. Holden and Pike teamed to finish off the Falcons. Holden won at 4 singles 6-1,6-3 while Pike, playing in her last Conference Tournament, crushed her opponent 6-2,6-0. In Tournament action the matches are stopped once a team wins the overall match.
BYU advances to the Quarterfinal round where they will take on the winner of the San Diego State/Utah match. Remember to follow along via live stats on the Mountain West Conference's website at themwc.com.
