Eugene, Ore. (May 12, 2005)--Kory Knell, BYU's co-captain and outfielder from Cottonwood High in Salt Lake City, was named Thursday to the District 8 ESPN the Magazine All-Academic baseball team.
The team sponsored by CoSida (College Sports Information Directors of America) moves on to the national ballot where Knell is eligible to be voted Academic All-America. That team will be released the end of this month.
Knell has a 3.95 cumulative grade point average in BYU's Master's of Accountancy program, where he is a member of three national honor societies. He has been nominated as an NCAA postgraduate. His 3.95 GPA was the top on the 11-man all-district team.
Earlier this year he was selected as the Cougar Club memorial Award winner given to the outstanding athlete with high scholarly achievement. Last year he was named National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball magazine for his performance against the Air Force Academy. Midway in his junior college career at Saddleback Community College in California, Knell served a Church mission to Illinois.
Two players with Utah ties made the all-district second team: Utah third baseman Jay Brossman (3.60 undecided major) and Southern Utah infielder Jason Ruiz (3.54 criminal justice).
