Seven Others Qualify for Regional Finals on Saturday

EUGENE -- BYU sophomores Amy Menlove, Niklas Arrhenius and Josh Rohatinsky will travel to the NCAA National Championship meet in Sacramento, Calif., next month after qualifying in their respective events at the 2005 NCAA West Regional Championships on Friday. Seven other athletes qualified for tomorrow's finals.

"We had some great performances today," BYU women's coach Craig Poole said. "Aneta Lemiesz and Heidi Magill ran particularly well and qualified for finals. They made it look easy. After the first day, we're sitting pretty well. We've advanced the girls we expected to advance, so we're looking good."

"I was really pleased with some events, and a little disappointed with some others," men's coach Mark Robison said. "Nik had an outstanding day in the discuss, and I was real pleased with our performance in the 1,500 meters. However, we expected to advance at least three guy in the 400-meter hurdles, but advanced only two."

In the men's discus, Arrhenius finished second behind Stanford All-American Michael Robertson. Arrhenius, the 2005 Mountain West Conference discus champion, finished the competition with a mark 187-6. Freshman Leif Arrhenius finished 11th with a mark of 174-03.

Niklas, who finished second in the same event last season, held the lead after two rounds of the third flight. Robertson took over with a distance of 190-2 on his final throw of the third round. While Niklas failed to improve on his mark in the finals, Robertson recorded a distance of 201-00 on the final throw of the competition to seal the victory.

Menlove, who won the 2005 Mountain West Conference Outdoor long jump title, finished third in the long jump with a mark of 21-00.50, easily qualifying for the National Championships in Sacramento.

"After running the 100-meter hurdles, Amy came back and did exceptionally well in the long jump," Poole said. "She had a huge jump on her third attempt, but fouled. She came back and still jumped over 21 feet. We're very proud of her performance."

Rohatinsky turned in a veteran performance in the 5,000-meters to finish fourth in a time of 13:57.88. Rohatinsky, the 2005 MWC Outdoor 10,000-meter champion, passed Oregon's Galen Rupp on the home stretch to grab one of only five national qualifying spots in the event.

"Josh ran a fantastic race," Robison said. "I'm very pleased with his performance. He ran a solid race against some very tough competition."

Freshman Heidi Magill, the 2005 MWC Outdoor 1,500-meter champion, advanced to Saturday's final in the 1,500 meters with a time an automatic qualifying time of 4:25.39. Freshman Ann Marie Thomas turned in a time of 4:30.11 to finish 14th overall. Thomas failed to qualify for Saturday's final by just over one-half of a second. Junior Ann Heiner, who jumped out to an early lead in the first heat, was unable to sustain the pace and slipped to 10th place in the heat with a time of 4:35.32 to finish 18th overall.

In the first of three heats in the men's 1,500 meters, Nathan Robison, the defending West Region champion, sprinted past the top-two runners in the final 40 meters to win the heat in a time of 3:48.57 and will advance to Saturday's finals in the event.

After hanging back in the pack for most of the race, senior Bryan Lindsay earned a spot in Saturday's final after sprinting past eight competitors with 350 meters remaining and held off the field to win the second heat in a time of 3:48.57. Freshman Dustin Bybee finished 21st overall with a time of 3:51.49.

"Saturday's final is going to be an outstanding race," Coach Robison said. "Our guys will be running against some of the best 1,500-meter runners in the nation."

Senior Aneta Lemiesz easily won the first of two heats in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 2:05.66. Lemiesz, the 2005 MWC Outdoor 800-meter champion, recorded the fastest preliminary time in the event and will represent BYU in Saturday's final. Freshman Michelle Lindsay turned in a 2:10.07 to finish 13th overall.

Senior Lars Kjerengtroen recorded a time of 1:51.12 in the 800 meters, finishing fifth in the first of two heats. Kjerengroen's time was good enough to finish seventh overall and earn one of eight spots in Saturday's final. Sophomore Jason Dorais finished in sixth place (12th overall) in the second heat with a time of 1:52.56.

In the first of four heats in the men's 400-meter hurdles, freshman Bryan Payne finished second behind the 2004 West Regional Champion, Brandon Johnson. Payne turned in time of 52.57 and will advance to Saturday's final with the seventh top time in the event.

In the third of four heats, sophomores Jacob Garlick and Nathan Rencher battled down the home stretch with Garlick finishing second in a time of 52.93. Rencher finished just .03 seconds behind Garlick with a time of 52.96. Garlick finished ninth overall, missing the cut by just over one-tenth of a second. Rencher finished 10th overall.

In the final heat, Ben Gardner, the 400-meter hurdles 2005 Mountain West Outdoor Champion, finished second to Arizona's Jeff Hunter with a time of 52.26 and advanced to Saturday's final with the sixth fastest time. Kansas Whitear finished third in a time of 53.47.

In the men's high jump, Mountain West Champion David Pendergrass finished 10th with a clearance of 6-foot-11. Sophomore Bryce Bergen, who entered the West Regional Championships with the fourth-best mark, finished with a clearance of 6-foot-9 to end up in 14th place. The 2004 NCAA National Champion, Jesse Williams of USC, won the event with a height of 7-04.25.

The Cougars got a dose of bad luck in the 110-meter hurdles when Jacob Garlick, the 2005 Mountain West Conference Champion, was charged with a false start in the event and was disqualified in the first of two heats.

In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Menlove finished fifth in the second of two heats with a time of 13.90. Menlove missed the cut by just two-tenths of a second.

David Chesser, the 2005 MWC Outdoor 400-meter Champion, finished fifth in the first of two heats in the event with a time of 47.46. Needing to finish with one of the overall top eight times in order to advance to Saturday's final, Chesser finished ninth overall, missing the cut by just over two-tenths of a second.

In the pole vault, freshman Julene Kaufusi finished 14th with a height of 12-06.

The Cougars will be represented in 15 different events during final events of the 2005 NCAA West Regional Championships on Saturday.
